Shopaholic (a mental disorder?)

Shopaholic means someone who obsessed with shopping. It came from SHOP + AHOLIC.

It is an obsession with shopping that eventually interferes with daily routine of an individual. Most of Shopaholics feel anxiety when not shopping, or they consider shopping as a remedy for their stress, boredom and sadness. They feel a change of mood, a sense of euphoria/happiness when shopping.

Excessive shopping may result to a mental disorder, debt, and marital discord. Nowadays, shopaholic can take anti depressant medication that lessen anxiety or stop compulsive shopping.

Symptoms of a SHOPAHOLIC:

  • Compulsive Buying
  • Go beyond budget
  • Tend to hide purchases from your partner and other mentor
  • Tend to hide credit card bills and bank statement
  • Feeling guilty after a shopping spree.
  • Shop when sad, bored and tense
  • Over used of credit card
  • Lying about how much they spent
  • Always thinking about money
  • Unable to pass up a "SALE"
  • Regular impulsive buyer
  • Not using items you've purchased
  • Using shopping as a "pick me up"
  • Don’t prioritize necessities
  • Allocating a large amount of time and money on shopping and planning future shopping expeditions
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms from shopping
  • Giving up other social or recreational activities to shop

Shopaholic must read Confession of a Shopaholic by Sophia Kinsella. You can relate to her situation and after reading that book,

… “NO, stop being so rebecca bloomwoods” “stop being shopaholic”.
